Even though the medical marijuana is illegal under the federal law as mentioned above, twenty-three states in U.S. have passed the laws for a variety used of medical marijuana (Rodd 1766). These states believe in “their traditional police power to protect the health, safety, and welfare of their citizens”; therefore, they raise the public support for the use of medical marijuana (Rodd 1766).
For this reason, the state laws for medical marijuana helps reinforce the belief of these states because the law protects the health, safety, and welfare of medical marijuana users (Rodd 1767). The patients have to show a proof of the recommendation from their physician(HSC). There are many compliance illnesses such as, “arthritis, cachexia, cancer, chronic pain, HIV-AIDS, epilepsy, migraine; and multiple sclerosis” that physicians may recommend medical marijuana for these diseases (HSC). Even though the state issues medical marijuana identification cards, registration is not mandatory for compliance (HSC). The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) launches the Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC) program for qualified patients in California (Medical Marijuana Program Frequently Asked Questions).
