The Decline in Public Education
Money makes you crazy. Everything in the world is a business now. There is a line from the movie The Dark Knight where The Joker says “if you’re good at something, never do it for free.” (Nolan, 2008). Schools are a business, and businesses need to make money in order to remain a functional organization. For public schools, the government funds them so basically, taxpayer money keeps the schools going. If at all you were to keep up with politics, you would see that schools are starting to fail. Schools are getting less and less from our government. There was a time when the downfall could have been stopped. Public schools contain a large percentage of the country's youth. Some states are not as wealthy as the other states. So why should it be fair that one school be better in one county than another school in a different county. If the country is going to give a nationwide curriculum, then why should a school in Chicago not have as much money than that of a school elsewhere. Within the last five years, at least 31 states provided less state funding per student in the 2014 school year (Leachman, Albares, Masterson, & Wallace, 2016). “In at least 18 states, local government funding per student fell over the same period. To add to that, the poverty level will continue to rise of students continue dropout or not take anything out of their time in school. In an article by Valerie Strauss, there is a line that says, “too many students will be doomed from a very early age to remedial education and dim prospects of life success.” (Strauss, 2013). If nothing is done to help the students today, America’s future isn’t looking bright.
