The U.S. Department of Education is an agency of the federal government that is in charge of operating the implementation of education in the United States. It is surprisingly the smallest cabinet of all the federal departments. Their job is to create policy for, those who teach and coordinate federal monetary funds that assists state education departments. The department is run and headed by the secretary of education, on the federal level of government. The federal government’s role focuses on providing federal funds to state departments of education. Funding promotes programs that reinforces what children are being taught in the classroom. Such as teaching students how to read, promoting science or help students attend college, among a number of others things.
The department of education was first established in 1867 by President Andrew Jackson. It was recognized as a non-cabinet-level agency in charge of collecting information on schools and teaching to help states establish effective school systems.
