Members are not required to be parents in order to participate in group counseling. The criteria that will help the counselor choose her members will be based on their straights. Straights are important because the counselor is aware of each member’s straights.

In selecting participants, some legal or ethical issues that will be considered would be to screen potential embers to determine whether any of them should be excluded (Remley & Herlihy, 2016). Counselors should pick members who have the same needs and goals and who are compatible with the group (ACA, 2014). Potential members who should be excluded are those who dominant group time, are aggressive when interacting with other or in a state of severe crisis (Remley & Herlihy, 2016). Dickson performs individual and group counseling, classroom guidance lessons, and high school guidance for 8th graders. In individual and group counseling Mrs. Dickson covers topics such as career planning, behavioral issues, and social etiquette with the students. She also has the opportunity to be the School Building Level Committee Chair and a 504 Designee. Mrs. Dickson once had the opportunity to lead a toy drive with the Student Government Association for the 7th and 8th graders. She really enjoys interacting with the students and considers it to be her favorite part.

Theoretical Case Study and Group Therapy When referring to groups, there are several different types, not all are psychotherapeutic groups, there are various types of groups that do not include counseling (Jacobs 2016). Our group topics were engaging and discussed personal matters that affected our lives. It is nice to have a sense of group cohesiveness, altruism and universality, but despite the closeness it does make one realize in the end that our problems are still ours alone. At the same time, it is good to have support and have others that resonate with your experiences and know that life is difficult and that it can be unfair (Yalom & Leszcz, 2005, p. 90). Conclusion In conclusion this semesters group therapy, has been a great learning experience to understand the therapeutic elements of the group.

When I decided to train to become a professional school counselor, I knew I had a long road ahead. I am trained to be a teacher, a special education teacher to be specific, and though I will be able to use much of my past experience as a classroom teacher in my school counseling practice, I am aware that I will also need to see my students in a new way, a more holistic way. I will need to focus not only on what works in the classroom, but what works in order to motivate and support the students with whom I meet. It is essential for me to determine what will drive me, inspire me to be the best school counselor for both my school and students, therefore, I must determine my professional philosophy of education and school counseling and develop my beliefs, vision and mission statements.
I believe that clinical counseling was what I needed, but I feel it could have been beneficial and helpful to receive support and acknowledgment from the professional school counselors on staff at our school. I believe that even if you feel like you may not be prepared to help a student it is important to at least acknowledge and address a students concern. I did not feel that I had a safe place to go at school when things were difficult because no one took time to acknowledge that I was not in the best
Group counseling is a form of therapy that tackles issues of personal growth through interpersonal interactions, not just between the counselor and client, but also with people beyond their social circle – relatively strangers. It includes counseling groups, structured groups and educational groups. Each groups has its strengths and purpose for forming the group. Similarly, individual therapy has its own strengths and both forms of therapy have been proven to be equally as effective by empirical evidence and current research. Different theories help structure and affect process of group therapy.
