It is nice to have a sense of group cohesiveness, altruism and universality, but despite the closeness it does make one realize in the end that our problems are still ours alone. At the same time, it is good to have support and have others that resonate with your experiences and know that life is difficult and that it can be unfair (Yalom & Leszcz, 2005, p. 90). When I decided to train to become a professional school counselor, I knew I had a long road ahead. I am trained to be a teacher, a special education teacher to be specific, and though I will be able to use much of my past experience as a classroom teacher in my school counseling practice, I am aware that I will also need to see my students in a new way, a more holistic way. I will need to focus not only on what works in the classroom, but what works in order to motivate and support the students with whom I meet. It is essential for me to determine what will drive me, inspire me to be the best school counselor for both my school and students, therefore, I must determine my professional philosophy of education and school counseling and develop my beliefs, vision and mission statements.
I believe that clinical counseling was what I needed, but I feel it could have been beneficial and helpful to receive support and acknowledgment from the professional school counselors on staff at our school. I believe that even if you feel like you may not be prepared to help a student it is important to at least acknowledge and address a students concern. I did not feel that I had a safe place to go at school when things were difficult because no one took time to acknowledge that I was not in the best
Group counseling is a form of therapy that tackles issues of personal growth through interpersonal interactions, not just between the counselor and client, but also with people beyond their social circle – relatively strangers. It includes counseling groups, structured groups and educational groups. Each groups has its strengths and purpose for forming the group. Similarly, individual therapy has its own strengths and both forms of therapy have been proven to be equally as effective by empirical evidence and current research.
