The solution to overcoming this barrier would be cultural competence training. Cultural competence training has shown great promise at improving the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of health professionals when it comes to working with diverse populations (Mareno, 2014). I find that it would be good for every organization to establish a generalized diversity training for all staff to take. This training could discuss that its okay to ask a patient about their cultural and how we as a care provider could better meet their needs. This training could also discuss the topic of being self-aware.
Creating value through collaboration has been a topic of concern over the last 50 years as the spending in health care has increased. The goal is to provide quality and affordability and because of past efforts, enrollment increased drastically while it created a shortage of providers. Integrating behavioral and medical health has not been properly addressed due to stigmas and lack of education. Behavior health is more common today and costly. In efforts to integrate and improve patient outcomes and provider experiences there are many ways to achieve this goal such as train medical providers, train behavioral practioniers and embed behavioral providers in primary care settings.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the Nazi guards alive during the Holocaust? Former Nazis to this day are still being prosecuted, but should they really be? Nazi guards should not be put into jail anymore for many reasons. First, Nazi guards wouldn’t have been able to stop the massacre from happening.
According to the Rogers & Vismara article, while cultural factors may influence the course of detection, diagnosis, and treatment of autism spectrum disorders, child treatment programs for autism tend to lack cultural considerations. One strategy the authors mentioned to address this issue is to train researchers and service providers in cultural competence. What would be some of the essential components of effective cultural competency training that is uniquely catering to culturally diverse children with autism spectrum
Cultural competence is a term I understand as a person being consciously aware, tolerant, and accepting of multiple ways of thinking, being and believing. I believe one cannot grasp the concept of cultural competence without first educating themselves on multiple, different cultures and religions. Ignorance is the number one cause of cultural bias, and ridding oneself of ignorance will open up perspectives and views. Cultural competence is about developing empathy, understanding and compassion for every race, and respecting the unique differences that each individual culture abides to.
Cultural competence is “the ability to communicate with, understand and effectively interact with people across cultures” (EYLF, 2015) Some legislation to keep in mind: • Belonging Being and Becoming The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia. - P. 16 Cultural Competence • Early Childhood Australia – Code of Ethics. Inclusivity and Cultural Responsiveness • The National Quality Standards – Relationships with children. Collaborative partnership with families and communities • Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 • Racial Discrimination Act 1975 • Anti-discrimination Act 1991 - OUR PHILISIOPHY
Cultural Competence to me is an individual’s, professional’s, or organization’s ability to understand, work, assist, and interact with people from different cultures, ethnicities, religious beliefs, values, gender, age, other than their own. Cultural Competence means being sensitive and aware of the differences that people posses, and then educating one self on those differences to appropriately interact or help them. I believe that cultural competence is an ongoing process that is developed over time. Individuals can obtain the knowledge and skills needed to be culturally sensitive through participating in workshops and trainings, creating family, individual, and community partnerships, and working with people from different ethnic back
After taking the self-assessment survey for quality and culture, I would like to improve and understand how cultural competence can have a real impact on clinical outcomes. Taking from some of the questions I answered wrong, it make me wants to be cultural competent. There are a few questions I am surprised and shocked, that I answered them incorrectly. I do understand that with training, I will start to gain cultural competence but it will take consistent individual practice on my part to develop and maintain individual cultural competence. Cultural competence can lead to, health literacy, health equity, and fewer diagnostic errors, which might help the patient expand their choices and access high quality medical providers because patient
As a woman of color, I believe it is essential that I become aware of my own biases in order to help individuals that have different beliefs, values, and cultural practices. When I was done completing the “Multicultural Counseling Competencies: A Self Examination” assessment, I became aware of my strengths, weaknesses, and areas where I need to grow as a future college counselor. To begin with, I notice that I questioned myself continuously whether I take the time to evaluate the limits of my competency when helping a student from a different cultural heritage from mine.
UNCG OLSL defines Intercultural Knowledge as: "This competency refers to one 's ability(skills) to develop an understanding for and interact with a variety of diverse human systems; those systems developed by humans such as culture, gender, economic, race, religion, physical, diversity of thought and mental models, sexual orientation, generational." I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania surrounded by Amish farmlands. From elementary to high school, we did not have much diversity. Most of my class was white middle class Christians. It was not until I came to college in Greensboro that I experienced a diverse population.
In today’s age, businesses and organizations who have effectively and efficiently integrated multinational culture into a strategic vision are more often than not extremely successful. These multinational teams present organizations with the opportunity to expand on a global scale while meeting and exceeding the standards of new challenges (Lewis, 2012). The United States Army has operated on a global scale for over 200 years. However as the battlefield has expanded and has become more complex, the need to develop cultural competency in Soldiers has grown exponentially. The Army has been an integral part of the Global War on Terrorism since October, 2001 with no apparent end in sight.
Cultural competency: Indians Culture competency is defined as one has the knowledge, the abilities and the skill to deliver care congruent with the patient’s cultural beliefs and practices (Purnell, 2013). As a nurse or a health care provider, increasing ones consciousness of culture diversity improves the possibilities for health care practitioners to provide competent care (Purnell, 2013). Nurses and all health care providers should be aware of other cultures to provide the best care that they can for that individual. Developing a relationship with diverse cultural groups involves good interpersonal skills and the application of knowledge and techniques learned from the physical, biological, and social sciences as well as the humanities (Purnell, 2013). I am choosing to select the Indian culture for my first assignment.
Over the past four months, this course has been one of the most eye-opening experiences I have had during my first year of college. Although I have always realized the importance of being culturally competent in daily life, specifically healthcare, I was unaware of the many ways that cultural competence can be obtained. This class gave me the opportunity to view situations from a different perspective, especially through the weekly discussion boards and peer responses. Learning from classmate can teach more valuable lessons than listening to boring lectures or reading hundreds of pages in a textbook because it is easier to relate to experience rather than hypothetical situations. For example, one of the discussion boards asked us to detail
