Interpersonal Communication and Diversity: Adapting to Others The title of chapter four is called Interpersonal Communication and Diversity: Adapting to Others. This chapter is mainly talking about interpersonal communication among to others such as understanding Diversity: describing our differences, Understanding Culture: Dimensions of our mental software, Barriers to effective intercultural communication and improving intercultural communication competence. The three materials that stood out to me about this chapter are understanding Diversity: describing our differences, Understanding Culture: Dimensions of our mental software and Barriers to effective intercultural communication. The one thing that stood out to me in this section was happiness: Indulgent and restrained. The book states that “Cultures that are more restrained do not necessarily expect freedom to have all of their needs met to achieve happiness”( Beebe, Redmond 94) . To say that many cultures that have a sense of independence and safety will have a better chance of happiness such as when they get in relationships or have a better career than other people who have less independence and safety around them. The last materials that stood out to me was Barriers to effective intercultural communication. The one section that caught my attention was stereotyping and prejudice. The definition of stereotyping is defined as a group of persons into an inflexible surround group. The definition of prejudice is an opinion of anyone that is formed before you know all facts about the person. Stereotyping communication can have a positive and negative effect on people, but prejudice does not. Prejudice is always negative
