In the article Interventions that Apply Scripture in Psychotherapy, the author Fernando Garzon addresses how to apply scriptures into therapy sessions. Garzon (2005) argues that the Bible is a tool that can be used to deliver messages of healing to those who believe. He goes on to explain that while the Bible is useful, therapists must understand how and when its use is beneficial for the client (Garzon, 2005). A few notable questions that therapists should consider before implementing the Bible into sessions are as follows: (1) Are you imposing your values on the client? George is a 30 year old Caucasian man who suffers from multiple issues such as depression, low self-esteem, insomnia, and suicidal thoughts (Garzon, 2005). He is known to have a history of abuse in his family and his parents suffer from alcohol and depression (Garzon, 2005). He has been diagnosed with depression and has suffered from emotional abuse from his mother. The main reason for his depression is that he has not found a spouse to share his life with because of his emotional issues. He has never been to a therapist before and has reservations about the experience. He grew up in the church and is a proclaimed Christian; however, he readily admits that in the last year he has lost some faith in God. He has come to my office seeking out methods to help him gain a better sense of who God is and is searching for peace. I will begin the process by implementing what Garzon (2005) calls the implicit scripture intervention.
