Irena Sendler - Holocaust Heroine

The Holocaust was a time period from 1939-1945, during World War II. It was a mass killing of Jewish People, Romas (Gypsies), Homosexuals, and the mentally and physically disabled people at the time. It was fueled by hate and the Nazi Party in Germany, run by Adolf Hitler. During this time Jews were imprisoned in “ghettos”, dirty, cramped, awful torture, death, and work camps where thousands were killed everyday, including children (Heilke). Irena Sendler was a young woman with a fearless outlook on life. She saved over 2,500 Jewish children out of the ghetto, risking her life (Mazzeo). She could have been killed for her actions, but continued to save others. …show more content…

Irena Sendler was the Head of the Children's Bureau, in the Zegota, a Polish group to help hide, free, and save Jews during WWII. Irena helped children out of the Warsaw Ghetto by smuggling them out in various ways. Some of her methods included smuggling children in coffins, bags, suitcases, ambulances, and even through sewers. She had many volunteers that helped her save these children that were also part of the Zegota (Mazzeo). Irena couldn't keep record of these kids, because it was too dangerous if she was found out, so she hid these children's information, so she could find their families after the war, under an apple tree in her yard. Irena saved over 2,500 Jewish kids doing this, and was almost caught many times. It was very risky to do this work, but she persevered. She couldn't guarantee the kids safe escape, but she assured the parents it would be better than the concentration and death camps.
