Kickstarter is an independent company located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Kickstarter began on April 28, 2009 with the primary goal to generate awareness to companies who need funding to endure the trek towards success Kickstarter is one of the most successful crowdfunding websites on the internet. The goal of Kickstarter is to provide an avenue for creative and innovative projects to be funded by people across the world in order to bring the product of interest into reality. Kickstarter uses its website as a commonplace to crowdfund the projects. To be an approved project, the project must be approved by a Kickstarter staff member. Both sites have a similar model, however they have key differences that makes them unique from Kickstarter. For example, Indiegogo takes 5% in fees from the current amount of money that you have raised not the goal amount, so even if you do not meet your goal it will allow you to take the funds and Indiegogo will take their share of the donated amount (“Fees & Pricing for Campaigners: How much does Indiegogo cost?”, n.d). Not needing to hit the goal amount allows the project to me more flexible with their goal amount, however it allows less credible sources to gain funding and keep it. GoFundMe also takes 0% of all donations however, it does take a 2.9% processing fee per order to sustain itself (“Fees on GoFundMe.”, n.d.). GoFundMe’s crowdfunding platform is super welcoming to individuals and personal causes. Campaigns to fund life events like education, medical treatment, and sports teams are prevalent on the site.
