In “Its Portion Distortion That Makes America Fat” by Brownlee, she claims that fast food companies and the portions they provide are the real reason that America has seen such a big increase in obesity. I agree that fast food companies are to blame for the rise in obesity and they should begin to take more responsibility for the affect they have had on America. In the not too distant past, fast food portions were smaller and could actually be seen as a suitable meal as they provided enough calories for one person. This all began to change when a man named Elliot Bloom began to study Taco Bell’s sales and discovered that their main consumers consisted of “young, single males who could ate at such restaurants as often as 20 times a month.”
In the article, “ Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko’s, he explains that it is not the children’s fault for eating fast food but the companies who keep expanding in local areas where it is-easier-for children to get a taste. Zinczenko agrees that it is not healthy for the body and it is a worldwide problem that most families are facing today. The villain in this true story is the industries that do not stop making these unhealthy fast food for children and spread advertisement all over the media. Don’t blame the eater, blame the government to make more strict rules on a healthy environment.
In “ The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Home,” written by Daniel Weintraub, he believes that, “... Parents - not the fast food industry… are to blame if they let kids eat unhealthy foods… ( 42 Weintraub). ” I agree with Weintraub because parents implant these unhealthy habits, need to know they are the main source and they need to encourage change. Parents try to give their children alternatives so they don’t have to do any work but just drive and pay. “ Fast food is fast.
Cheeseburgers, fried chicken, French fries, chocolate bars, sodas, etc. are one of the cheap and delicious foods that anyone can afford it, but if someone surpasses this it may end up affecting your health. Don’t blame the eater by David Zinczenko talks about how fast food contributes to obesity, some faults of the children consuming it and some faults of the parents allowing them. His research is based by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that estimates $100 Billion dollars are spent yearly in health care. The fast food industry is taking advantage of children by providing them with foods that cause obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.
Don’t Blame the Eater: Rebuttal In his article "Don 't Blame the Eater", David Zinczenko discusses that obesity is a grave health issue I the United States of America. He argues that almost all of the kids who eats at fast food joints are more likely to become obese. He then goes on to inform his readers that during his teenage years, he, like many other American kids, was surviving on fast-food due to it accessibility and affordability.
In David Zinczenko’s article, he explains why children who eat most of their meals at fast food restaurants are not to blame for being obese or unhealthy. This is because places like McDonalds don’t offer healthy options. However, when you bring a child to a fast food place they generally won’t go for a salad, instead they’ll get a burger with some fries and a soda. So even if these places did offer healthier options, which now most do or they at least offer the nutritional information, children generally would not pick those over the less healthy options. These restaurants are not to blame for the growing obesity and diabetes rates in children.
Fast food restaurants should not be held responsible for the health of Americans. It baffles me that so many people want to blame McDonalds for obesity when we as adults chose what we eat. I will be the first to admit that I am addicted to fast food and I know that I am overweight. I am to blame for that, not fast food restaurants. I am the one that decides to go out to eat, I am the one who decides what I order, and I am the one who physically eats the food.
In the article, “ The battle against fast food begins in the home ” , Daniel Weintraub suggests that parents are to blame for children obesity not fast food companies. He supports his claim by gathering information and explaining the research used to show how most studies focused in on consumption of fast food and how it is affecting children obesity. The purpose of this is to be more aware that parents need to start taking more responsibility to make children stop blaming others for something that happens in the home. I agree with Weintraub and his article from what i think and from observations according to child obesity. From experience i have seen child obesity and what seems to be the answer to this.
As obesity rates in the U.S. increase, people look at someone to blame for this epidemic. The most obvious perpetrator is the fast food industry, as its influence on American society is negative beyond doubt. Even though certain individuals would be looking to blame themselves for this issue, itś the fast food corporations that are causing the epidemic on today’s society with its convenience, low prices of foods and unhealthy choices are what makes fast food such a menace to today’s society. Food has transitioned from the kitchens and dinner tables of America’s homes to the everyday fast food restaurant. Causes of this include convenience, as most Americans now are working more and are leaving less time to cook and prepare food at home.
However, the change in attitude requires the participation of policymakers and health professionals. The aforementioned players should disseminate appropriate information regarding health consequences of fast foods. Further, the policymakers should formulate policies that control the amount of calories, sugars, salt, or cholesterol found in the fast foods. The later requires close coordination and cooperation between the industry and the government (Philipson 1721). The industry should help consumers in making healthy food choices.
Fast foods restaurants are multiplying due to the consumers wanting more from them, and it leads to obesity in America. Even some Americans, do not like the food some fast food restaurant provide for their options so they go to their second choice of foods. Some Americans are trying or did sue the fast food restaurant because they either are obese or they just want their money back. Parents are the ones who set an example by eating healthy foods in front of their children, so they eat healthy People would eat fast food and will blame the restaurant for the results from the food they chose to eat. The effects of eating fast foods are very dangerous especially if you are young child.
As to cause and to contribute are two very different things. Source 1, Do Fast Food Restaurants Contribute to Obesity?, explains that the closer and more accessible a fast food restaurant is the more appealing it becomes. The source states that consumers with low self-control become increasingly tempted to purchase these foods as it is so easy to do so. The close proximity of fast food restaurants are said to also cut down travel costs thus decreasing fuel expenditure, thus increasing consumer buying power by allowing one to be thriftier with their money.
Some people make it seem like obesity is the eaters fault in fact in It’s A Portion Distortion That makes America Fat Shannon Browniee states,”Mostly young single males, who ate as such restaurants as often 20 times a month a month. In fact 30 percent of Taco Bell’s customers accounted for 70 percent of its sales” (33). This shows that it is not always the fast foods fault but also us because we use food as a stress reliever. At the same time it is not all the way the customers fault it is also the restaurants fault also.
So this would mean that the parents are a main culprit in the epidemic of the nation's obesity. However, the question remains is to how it began in the first place. Is there a good reason behind the parents not teaching their children to eat the correct foods? Or is it that parents are too lazy to teach their children that daily consumption of fast
But should fast food companies really be blamed as the major determinant of obesity in the United States? Is it their responsibility to help people control obesity or is it a responsibility of the people? My research backs up my stand to prove that the fast food companies are not the ones to be blamed, it’s the people themselves. Obesity depends upon the type of food we consume over a daily basis.
