Since its founding in 2006, under the name of the Islamic State of Iraq, ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) has established itself as arguably the most powerful terrorist organization in the world. The descendants or groups like Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, ISIS has proven themselves equally as dangerous, if not more so. ISIS made their first major global appearance by using the Syrian Civil War to swoop in and capture vulnerable Syrian territory. To date, they control one third of Syria and substantial portions of Iraq. “International investigators said on Friday that in order for the Islamic State to remain financially viable it would have to further expand territory it controls in Iraq and Syria and take over more resources” (Hosenball 1). Because of this, it is likely that ISIS will only continue to grow and obtain more territory, especially if the rest of the world does not work together in attempt to more aggressively combat ISIS. It can be shown that these allied nations are not doing enough by this report which states, “ISIS has almost doubled the land it controls in Syria since the US-led coalition began airstrikes against the extremist group in the summer” (Mailonlinen 1). In these large amounts of territory, ISIS has exerted their rule with extreme force. Following ISIS’s strict interpretation of Islam and showing complete adherence to their authority and rule is required. If the people living under the flag of ISIS fail to do so, a medieval styled execution is usually the result. The exact number of people executed by ISIS is unknown, but thousands of Iraqi and Syrian civilians have fallen to their swords. In addition to citizens of those countries, ISIS has murdered countless foreigners, such as aid workers, journalists, and other people traveling there. The murder of James Foley is one of the more well-known executions by ISIS. James Foley was a freelance journalist that had been working in Syria for several years. In 2012 he was taken hostage by ISIS and then two years later he resurfaced in a video done by ISIS, where he was beheaded. The execution of James Foley was just one case of ISIS’s many crimes against humanity. These executions are often videotaped
