Islam Empire of Faith-Prophet Muhammad and rise of Islam
What were the characteristics of the society that Muhammed grew up in? Where did he and his family fit within this society?
Muhammad was born in the Arabian Peninsula around the year 570 A.D., a time when the region’s Bedouin tribes engaged in nearly constant warfare (4.58). Being born in the town of Mecca, Muhammed was sent by his parents to live with these tribal peoples, as they were seen as being more in tune with their Arabic history and culture (5.40). The issue arose when the Kaaba had fallen into disrepair, and the Black Stone needed replacing, Mohammed proposed a solution of the chieftains carrying the stone together. In gratitude for his wisdom, Mohammed was allowed to replace the Black Stone in the Kaaba himself (14.40). This display of grace and wisdom earned Mohammed the nickname Al-Amin, meaning “the trusted one” (14.50). The true defining moment of his life, and the accepted start of Islam came while he was in the caves among the mountains above Mecca and had a vision of an angel who instructed him to speak in the name of God (15.53). This is the starting moment of the prophetic life of Muhammed (16.42). The defining message of this new prophetic career was that there is only one god (17.18). This was unique and nearly controversial at the time in the Arab world as different tribes and people would worship many different gods separately, and this message meant that all of the Arab people of these beliefs had to unite and worship a single indivisible god. These events shaped the Old Wisdom of the original Muslims who promoted the faith amongst their neighbors, and laid the groundwork for the later structure of the Islamic Empire (Wade, The Rise of Pastoralist Empires, February 26, 2023). These few events have served as the basis and catalyst for a now worldwide religion. The founding of this religion is similar to the founding of Christianity, which began with an angelic revelation as well, but differs from it in that Mohammed only claimed to be a teacher, and not God
