On April 23, 1940, Ita Ford was born to William P. Ford, Sr. and Mildred Teresa O’Berne Ford in Brooklyn, New York. Her college years were spent at Marymount Manhattan College and succeeding that, she joined the Maryknoll sisters in 1961. The Maryknoll Sisters are a group of nurses, teachers, theologians, teachers, social workers, doctors and environmentalists that devote their lives to serving others overseas. After three years, the Christian woman left due to health problems. In 1971, she reapplied and was accepted after working as an editor for a publishing company for seven years. That is because they did not even discriminate as to what cultures they are going to help. They try to aid everyone, despite of religious and cultural backgrounds. Ford’s positive approach was also shown through her living conditions while she spent her time overseas. While in Chile, Ford lived in a very poor and broken down town. She sought to convert and better understand the local population wherever she was. Ford did this by ministering to the needs of people, especially those living in poverty in Chile. In El Salvador, she assisted those living in poverty and war victims by providing transportation, shelter, food, and burial. From what I understand, Ford did not face many obstacles except almost losing her life and dying a tragic death. August 23, 1980, a flash flood occurred and one of the Maryknoll sisters died. Ford nearly died from the same flood, but was saved by someone pushing her from the vehicle. Ford died after being secretly watched and followed by national guardsman of El Salvador inside and outside of the airport on December 2, 1980.
