The use of the metaphor of colour in connection with racism and sorrow is important in the novel for the reader to understand Maud Martha’s character, and through these parts of the Black experience. Throughout “Maud Martha” appearance and colour take a large focus. The reader sees the experiences of a young, Black woman during the 1950’s who deals with colourism at every turn: in her marriage, family, and most of her daily interactions. For almost every person that is introduced the reader is told about their skin colour, hair type, etc. It makes sense, then, that Maud Martha’s constant awareness of the way she looks in contrast to everyone around her bleeds into her making sense of the world through colour.

Candy Seeing Beau lay dead on the lawn of Mathu’s house, I knew this wouldn’t end well. I thought that Mathu killed him but I wasn’t going to let any punishments happen to him. He and Mrs Merle raised me since my parents died. They taught me most of what I know so I wasn’t gonna let anyone touch that man.
I’m glad that Chencha came to check on Tita, it shows that she loves her. I was sad when I found out that Chencha was raped by a group of bandits. In my opinion, Mama Elena has too much pride and she’s very arrogant. After all the things Tita went through with her, Tita still tried her best to cook for her mother, but Mama Elena was still hateful. No one was able to please her, I kept wondering, why don’t they just let her starve?
Anne’s positive attitude and hope helped her overcome her distressing time in hiding during World War II. Other examples can also be found in the poem “Homesick”, and journal entries written by youngsters living during World War II. Having hope helps overcome obstacles that you may have thought was unfeasible to surpass. Hope can be found in everything. Fear can leave you petrified, but hope is the greatest strength that you can possess and hope will always overpower fear.

It is the start of World War two, I'm so terrified, my father has gone into the war I can hear all the gunshots, children crying and asking where is my daddy. I start getting tears in my eyes my mother is says "don't cry it is okay darling. " A little voice in my head is saying "It will be ok" but I Know it is not going to be okay, but I was so frozen with fear.

Describing a childhood walk to the river, Hang brings up her surroundings, such as “trees, heavy with purplish flowers” (43), emphasizing the lush nature of the foliage and the vibrant color of the flowers. Her surroundings are vivid and alive, reflecting the fact that she still has her own life at the moment. She and Thu, her neighbor, are catching insects by the river and even these insects are associated with color imagery, as Hang mentions the “dusty gold wings of the june bugs” (44). The color gold is associated with this golden age for Hang in which she still feels hopeful. On the trip Hang and her mother take back to their village, they pass through a market.

Ivy’s blindness is a representation of the village its self and symbolizes how the Elders kept the villagers in the dark about the real world. The blindness makes Ivy more vulnerable to the outside world, yet it also makes her the best candidate for going into the woods, because, per her father, she wouldn’t be able to see the horrors of the outside world. It was also assumed that the creatures would not harm her because they would have mercy on her, as with Noah. However, Ivy’s blindness does, in fact, make her a strong person because she has a different sense of awareness that others can’t experience. Although she was terrified of walking through the woods alone, Ivy ended up exactly where she needed to be.
