Responding to Izzie’s needs, behavioral cures, and being consistent in parenting I believe has led her to develop a secured attachment. Based on Alexander Thomas and Stella Chess’s study children’s temperament, and easy baby is described to have positive disposition. Their body functions operate regularly, and they are adaptable. They are general positive, showing curiosity about new situations, and their emotions are moderate or low in intensity (pp. 186). There are several dimensions of temperament. I chose to look at Izzie’s adaptability, the quality of her mood, and her approach- withdrawal at in order to decide where she would fall on in the categories of temperament. Adaptability is how easy the child is to adapt to changes in their environment. The quality of mood refers to the contrast of the amount of friendly, joyful, and pleasant behavior with unpleasant, unfriendly behavior. And the approach-withdrawal looks at the response to a new person or object based on whether the child accepts the new situation or withdrawals from it (Table 7-2 pp 186), Her 9 month report states that Izzie is readily adaptable to new people and situations in the pediatrician’s office and the playroom. She made eye contact and vocalized to them quite a bit. She cried when given a vaccine, but calmed down rather quickly. The specialist noted that Izzie is cheerful throughout play sessions and that the examination session and rarely became tense or emotional during the period of observation. She also said that Izzie readily engaged with her socially and made good eye contact. She seemed at ease with the examiner throughout the session. At home she is very outgoing and friendly with new people. I decided to continue her at her old playgroup, as well as introduce her to a new playgroup because of the enthusiasm she has showed in new social situations. I keep a pretty regular routine and Izzie on a day to day basis is usually calm and cheerful. She also tolerates minor problems such as hunger, fatigue, and stress easily.
