JB Hi-Fi was established in 1974 by John Barbuto (JB) which is where the name came from. The store started in East Keilor, Victoria as a lone store. John Barbuto only had one way of life which was to sell a special range of Hi-Fi and recorded music at Australia’s lowest prices. JB Hi-Fi was sold in 1983 and from then to 1999 another nine stores had opened. In July 2000, JB Hi-Fi was purchased by private equity bankers and senior management with the goal of making JB Hi-Fi a nationwide store. In October 2003, JB Hi-Fi was then put on the Australian Stock Exchange.
