The Joint Task Force Headquarters (JTF HQ) provides general and direct support for command and operational missions. The JTF HQ is responsible for knowledge management as well as information management (J8 Studies and Analysis). The JTF HQ delivers information and recommendations as an advisory body to decision makers in support of the decision cycle. Being a part of a military organization the structure of the JTF HQ has chain of command inherent in its operation. In addition, the JTF HQ is configured in a way that enables cross-coordination with higher, adjacent, subordinate and external stakeholders. (JP-1). Along with the traditional J1-J8 staff members the JTF HQ utilizes Boards, Bureaus, Centers, Cells and Working Groups (B2C2WG) for communication mechanisms to enable Joint Force Commanders to “command and control forces, with timely and accurate information and recommendations”.(source) B2C2WG facilitates vertical communication by granting and establishing appropriate authority levels as needed to accomplish tasks. The hierarchy of that chain of command can be predetermined by rank and prescribed command structure from directorates. The up-and-down, vertical pattern, form of communication can also be developed and decided when forming a JTF HQ. The creation of subordinate entities such as cells and working groups aids vertical communication by segmenting specific work to a particular unit and culminating information from each unit at an integrating function such as a Center or Board before reaching the JTF Commander.
