Pennsylvania (Penn) State’s assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky who worked under head coach Joe Paterno appeared to be an upstanding model citizen; however, he was found to be a serial child rapist (Crandall et al., 2014). Those who were high in power were responsible for informing other of the past of Sandusky. The Board of Trustees knew about his predatory actions and incidents, yet fail to report them. Jerry Sandusky started out as the assistant coach at Penn State in 1969 and later became the defensive coordinator. He was most known for the establishing of the Second Mile, a charity that developed in 1977 as a group foster home for troubled disadvantaged boys (CNN, 2013). In addition to the 60 million dollar fine, there was also a 13 million dollar fine imposed by the Big Ten Conference (O'Keefe, 2011). After all, that has happened, and lawsuits passed down, Penn State reports that the total amount of settlement awards paid to Sandusky's victims was over $109 million (CNN, 2013). In 2014 most of the punishment was reversed, as the players should not have loss victories and scholarships due to misconduct of their staff. Curley, Spanier, and Schultz had some charges dropped due to lack of legal representation; however, they were sentenced to jail time for failing to report a 2001 allegation that assistant coach Sandusky was molesting young boys (CNN, 2013). Although most of their charges were dropped, charges of child endangerment were received by all involved, due to plea or being found guilty. The officials were also found guilty of conspiracy; therefore, charges were later dropped against Curley, Spanier, and Schultz (Carpenter, 2011). All three of the officials were sentenced to jail time, fines, and probation as a result of the scandal. Spanier received a sentence of 4 to 12 months in prison, 7,500 dollars in fines, and two years of probation (CNN, 2013).
