While modern scholars have been unable to authenticate the Gospel of Mark’s author, traditionalists, dating back to 130 CE have asserted the Gospel of Mark was written by John Mark, a disciple of the Apostle Peter (Harris, 2014). Papias, a second century bishop of Hierapolis, refers to John Mark as a disciple of the Apostle Peter and asserts the Book of Mark is a compilation of Peter’s recollections of Jesus. However, after thoroughly reviewing the Gospel of Mark, modern day scholars have been unable to authenticate John Mark as the author. Subsequently, the Gospel of Mark’s author is considered to be anonymous, however for ease of reference scholar’s commonly refer to the gospel’s author as Mark.
