John Newton, an Anglican clergyman in England and the founder of the evangelical, was born in 1725 in London. In his early age, Newton’s mother taught him to read scripture and memories Calvinist catechism and hymns. They both also attended Independent Congregationalist church, even though during that time, it only made up of one percent of the city’s population. After Newton’s mother had died, when Newton was seven years old, he became distant from his belief, and he left to joy the sailor with his father. At the age of eleven, Newton went on the five seas voyages where he often gets himself into adolescent trouble. However, Newton would turn back after he remembered what his mother taught him. Many times Newton fell into the wickedness, God always tries to give him direction to turn back, for example, through symbolic dreams. Dreaming is one of the few ways God use to speak to us. God is trying to talk to Newton to call him back to his faith. The most significant event that causes Newton to reflect upon his belief was the violent storm on March 21, 1748. This was a near death experience that helped Newton reconnect with his faith. During the storm Newton started to pray and promised that if he makes it back alive, he will spend the rest of his life serving God. This event inspired Newton to write the Amazing Grace. After the storm, Newton faith began to grow slowly while continuing his voyage. One day, Newton became ill, he contracted a fever that had killed on of his friend Job Lewis. Newton was ready for his life to end, yet, he prayed to God for two things: a better understanding of the faith to help him walk the path of righteousness, and freedom of the slave trade and the seafaring life.
