Even though Rose’s stats says he belongs in the Hall of Fame, he has been banned for breaking the rules. People who break the rules should be punished. It shouldn’t matter that that person is a small child or the president of the United States. Rose, like many other athletes, has made personal mistakes that happen to become public knowledge. Take Jose Canseco’s career for example. He had a career average of .266 with 462 homeruns and 1407 RBI during his seventeen years in the big leagues. But like Rose, Canseco made a mistake during his career. His mistake forced him into earlier retirement. Canseco not only used steroids, but he also injected five of his teammates with steroids. Canseco tells his story in his memoir— Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big. Also Canseco has been arrested six times and has been involved with a number of scandals while playing in the MLB and even after. Canseco has the credentials to be voted into the Hall of Fame but because of his connections to steroids and his questionable character, his name will never be hung in the hall. An important question we must ask ourselves about our society is who do we want our children to look up to? Do we want our kids looking up to players like Hall of Famers and future Hall of Famers: Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson, Cal Ripken Jr, and Roberto Clemente? Or do we want them looking up to players like Pete Rose, Barry Bonds, Manny Ramirez, Jose Canseco, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGwire? The BBWAA should realize when baseball fans visit Cooperstown, New York, they go to see the legends that impacted baseball in some great way. What these players do in their spare time may stir conversation but, it does not keep fans from supporting
