Journal Entry:
In this lesson the teacher used a summative exam assessment to evaluate the students learning over the course of the unit. The teacher planned on scoring and grading each individual students exam to help determine whether the student had learned what she expected them to and if they grasp the information she taught. This type of assessment could also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the teacher’s instructional strategy as well as determine if the student has mastered specific concepts related to physical education content. This particular exam was made up of multiple choice, true and false, matching, and a written response. The purpose of this exam was to help measure students’ knowledge and despite the fact the test was administered on paper I did see the teacher make accommodations for students. After speaking with the teacher she did explain one student in the class was allowed flexibility with timing of the test and the student required extra time as documented on the students IEP. This type of testing accommodation helped remove obstacles of taking the test process without changing the constructs and information being tested. Despite the accommodation each student was expected to rely on his or her memory to respond to the specific topics on the test. As discussed in class and exam is a type of assessment that should be created in a fair but challenging manner to accurately gauge students learning. Based on the teachers learning objectives and goals she chooses questions that were appropriate item types for both her objectives and goals. Each questions effectively helped to assess the student’s ability to recognize what was logical or not using technical terms and vocabulary they have learned over the unit that helped to reflect the learning objectives and goals. After looking at the exam myself I notice the instruction the teacher created were clear and explicit in order to make sure the students knew
