Texas has many issues that need to be addressed however, they are not being prioritized. Instead we are hearing about trivial issues such as drug testing those who are applying for unemployment and banning abortion. We should be however, paying more attention to issues that are nearing crisis such as the education system. The education system is currently a disaster and needs be focused on to improve the lives of our children and futures. Students are not being prepared for the real world due to the conditions teachers and students are being forced to work with. Texas needs to undo school funding cuts and reform testing in order to improve the future of the state.

Students are constantly being tested and being graded on these test rather than on school work done throughout the year. However, students and instructors spend most of the school year preparing for state testing, without leaving much room for comprehensive learning. Texas schools are failing our students by teaching them how to test rather than teaching them comprehensive learning or critical thinking skills that will be very useful in their future success. They are neglecting teaching them everyday tasks needed as an adult such as balancing your check book and budgeting your money, only teaching what the government deems they should learn. Test are also being used to determine if a student will graduate and unfortunately many students are failing these tests causing students to fall off track and even some to drop out of school. The tests put so much pressure on the students that some may not be comfortable testing, causing them to do poorly and making the test ineffective as it is not truly recording the student’s
