Standardized testing does nothing to help a students education. It puts unnecessary pressure on students to do the best they can and in most cases a test won’t show how much a student understands about the material they’re tested on. Some students are not good test takers. They might be the best in the class but still fail a test because they might freeze up and miss questions that they otherwise could’ve answered correctly. These tests stress kids out so much that they start bad habits like nail-biting, not to mention they may develop headaches from stress and they may even lose sleep because of the added stress. The cause of this unneeded pressure on students and their educators could be directly contributed to the No Child Left Behind act that was enacted by President George H.W. Bush and his administration in 2001. This made testing the main focus of the curriculum. Instead of leaving "no child left behind", it ultimately leaves many more kids behind. …show more content…
You lose precious subjects like science, social studies, and even anything in the arts subject when teachers focus on the subjects of testing which are, more often than not, math, english, and writing. Before the No Child Left Behind program, testing wasn’t the main focus of the curriculum. The problem here is the amount of testing that's required by the Department Of Education. To be qualified for federal funding, schools have to have these standardized tests and reach a certain score. If they don't have enough kids score well enough, they don't receive money that they might not get by any other means. This is what makes the schools teach to test because many of them do not have any other means of collecting the proper funds to continue functioning as a
