Every year public schools in your state do state testing for their student’s kindergarten through 12th grade. Teachers create their curriculum based on the state testing to make sure the kids are well equipped and ready for the test. There is controversy surrounding state testing and how teachers only teach the children what they need to pass the test. The test does not measure the students GPA or their grade in that class. Teachers teach kids what they need to know to pass standardized tests so that school can get the funding it needs, they are not teaching them tools to use beyond high school. One of the arguments about state testing is how state standardized tests affect the amount of money that school is given based on how many students pass. The more students who pass the test help get the school more money and the more students who fail prevent the school from getting the money it needs. Standardized tests exist for administrative, political, and financial purposes, not for educational ones. If 99% of a teachers class passes the test and another teacher only has 75% of her kids pass the test, the teacher who had more kids pass the test could end up getting paid more than the teacher who had less kids pass.
