Nursing is a can be viewed as a very broad topic and therefore defined and observed in many ways. When most people think of nurses, they think of people that give them shots, do their check-ups, caregivers, and many more different ways. To me, a nurse is a person who has many skills that are needed for their job title, but professionalism and patient-centered care are two of the most distinctive aspects to this field of work. Professionalism allows the nurse to separate his or her personal life from their professional life to be seen as an honest, caring, and skillful individual. It is currently being transitioned into the terminology of professional identity instead of professionalism. Professional identity is defined by Giddens (2017), as “a sense of oneself that is influenced by characteristics, norms, and values of the nursing discipline, resulting in an individual thinking, acting, and feeling like a nurse” (p.379). A professional nurse is someone who has a unique personality due to them being seen by others as compassionate, empathetic, critical thinkers, and promote different aspects of communication. Eling (2017) describes the basic principles of professional nursing in her Professional Role Development Student Slides as doing, being, acting ethically, flourishing, and changing identities. These principles help the nurse to be able to think, act, and feel like a professional nurse. A professional nurse needs to represent himself or herself as an individual who is ethical, moral, knowledgeable, and shows aspects of leadership. Nurses form a type of community that others look to for guidance, and when nurses do not present themself in a professional manner, it can put a bad name to the profession as a whole. I will need to continuously better my understanding to different cultures and beliefs of the world to help minimize any biases that I may have. I will also need to be aware of any biases that I may have that could hinder my ability to care for my patient. Also being aware of different cultures and beliefs will help me individualize the care for my patient and help me improve the care of other patients with the same beliefs after them. All of these will help become developed in the concept of patient-centered
