Imagine being on call 24 hours a day, and during the day receiving a phone call from an expecting mother that says, “MY WATER JUST BROKE!”. Imagine getting out of bed at 2 a.m. and rushing to the clinic to help deliver the mother’s new arrival. You enter the building, walk down a few corridors, and finally make it to the delivery room. As soon as you get there you have to be prepared to get straight to work. You lay the mother gently on the bed being sure to keep her calm as she endures the contractions that come and go every 3 minutes. You wash your hands and quickly put on a pair of gloves and check her cervix. She is five centimeters dilated. After 12 hours of labor and five strong pushes, a healthy baby girl has entered the world”
For midwife, Jualeah Early this is a typical day at the Birth Center. As the Team Lead at Baby and Company in Cary, North Carolina, Jualeah works alongside nine other midwives to help deliver and care for expecting mothers and their newborns. At first sight, the building is reminiscent of a comfortable living area that is accompanied by family and guests. The sky blue and light tan sofa provide a sense of serenity that the mother’s find especially pleasing. In the corner of the room is a small bin full of children’s play toys; a few of them out on the carpet as if a child had previously played in the area. For the mothers who set foot in the building, the building becomes more than just a birth center, the birth center becomes their second home. The homey setting along with the compassion, patience, and attentiveness that Jualeah was able to provide helped to enrich her client's overall
