I Feel Just Like an Entrepreneur
The word entrepreneur is a popular term today used to describe the occupations of countless individuals. By simply using the word, it conjures up images of the immense ecosystem of startups in Silicon Valley, and the idea of having control of your own destiny rather than accept a grueling corporate job. Describing oneself as an entrepreneur can create the same awe and admiration from other individuals as describing oneself as a doctor or lawyer. What differs is that the word entrepreneur applies just as much to Elon Musk the CEO of SpaceX as it applies to a person who simply “has an idea”. In the article Just don’t do it by Deborah Cameron, she details the effect and the perception of using the word just. Using various statements, she argues that it is unfair that women are associated with using the word just more often, which causes them to be not taken seriously. Other critics argue that women need to learn to not use the word in order to be perceived as confident and assertive. While others argue that women allow themselves to be downtrodden by using the word, Cameron explains the usage as “[…] it’s a way of being polite by displaying your awareness of others’ needs.” In this interpretation, it makes absolute sense to say “could you just turn on the air conditioning” versus “turn on the air conditioning.” The sentences achieve the same purpose, but the slight difference in word choice causes the first sentence to seem reasonable and the second one to appear rude and commanding. Just has the potential to be interpreted as weak or polite which can make using the word confusing if the interpretation is generalized. To further show the absurdity on the perception of the word just, Cameron explains how Nike did not coin their slogan “Just do it” to signify weakness. Although unjust, women unfortunately may be perceived as less confidence due to using this word. This diminishes their own beliefs and may change the way they perceive themselves.
