Kids on the hook for fast food

Are fast food companies targeting your children? Although they offer healthier sides and beverages, it is still more appealing to certain audiences. Advertising to children under the age of 12 and minority groups seem to be most common and is only growing.
Currently children are aimed at with advertising for food items which don’t really meet any type of nutritional standards. According to a report Fast Food Facts 2013, only 3% of all kids’ meal combos meet the CFBAI’s and KidsLiveWell’s nutritional criteria and dietary guidelines. In addition to these numbers realistically children are being marketed for something that really doesn’t meet their industry’s own standards. Its important parents recognize these ads and health benefits in order to regulate/monitor their children’s options in fast food. Young kids should be taught even encouraged to learn healthier eating habits rather than eating Kids Meals which only contain a side of apples in the nutritional benefits the meal comes with. …show more content…

In 2012 the fast-food industry spent $4.6 billion marketing mostly unhealthy products, and children and teens remained key audiences for that advertising. It may not be the company’s fault children see these ads but they perpetuate the problem by spending billions in advertising rather than addressing the problem itself. Also in the report fast-food advertising spending on Spanish –language TV increased 8%. KFC and Burger King increased their spending by 35% to 41%, while reducing English-language advertising. Furthermore African American kids and teens see 60% more fast-food ads than white kids the same age.
