Valerie Bertarelli’s husband, Tom, completes a long list of chores and is rewarded with his favourite dishes, starting with his favourite Eggs Benedict made Valerie’s way. This is targeted to the adolescent age bracket because of the style of cooking Valerie does. The dishes are high sugar and fat which appeal to teenagers as being very appetising and preferred food choices. Valerie is also makes sure not only her looks, but her equipment is ‘trendy’ and up to date in the fashionable world which teenagers heavily indulge and base themselves of as growing adults (adolescents). Adolescents are now the key life-cycle group of major and specialized food marketing and advertising efforts. Food marketers are interested in youth as consumers because of their purchasing influence, spending power and because they are the future adult consumers. During the 1.5 hour viewing time there were multiple techniques and channels used to reach youth and which have been occurring for a long time, beginning since when they are toddlers, to foster brand-building and influence food product purchase behaviour. These food marketing channels include television advertising, in school marketing, product placements, kid’s clubs, the Internet, toys and products with brand logos, and youth-targeted promotions, such as cross-selling. Foods shown in the advertisements were fast food outlets including KFC and McDonalds were marketed to teenagers and are high in fat and sugar. This means they do not meet with national dietary recommendations/ the healthy eating pyramid. Pick the extras- There are so many fun things that you can add to your hummus board to make it unique. I like to add nuts, olives, marinated cheese, fresh fruit, and even dried fruit. Grapes are always easy and simple, and seasonal berries can be a treat. I also love going to the fresh olive bar at the fancy grocery store to pick out a few new-to-me things, I like to think of this as a time to try a new-to-you item, pick up something seasonal, or to add a favourite indulgence.
5. Assemble- This is the time to have a little fun. Don’t overthink this part. I like to place my hummus containers first, then if I have any little bowls of olives, I’ll put those down, then I’ll just casually add everything else. Start with your veggies, crackers, and larger pieces of fruit, then fill in any gaps with the small things like dried fruit and nuts. It’s a good idea to use sturdy vegetables like celery or cucumber spears to “fence” in vegetables like tomatoes that might want to roll around.
6. Garnish- You can add a few sprigs of fresh herbs if you’d like a garnish. It’s nothing fussy, but a few little finishing details really bring a hummus platter
