Paradigms of Narcissism on Social Media
In relation to all four articles, Sara Konrath’s “Is Declining Empathy Technology’s Fault?” portrays the strongest argument because social media is evidently the new technological means to promote empathy towards misfortunate individuals, as acts of generosity have been demonstrated in previous years. Konrath presents that American society’s paradigm on the use of social media includes the fact that people constantly post pictures of themselves and criticize their acquaintances in status posts, yet it does not “mean that social media always creates narcissism” (Konrath). Despite the fact that narcissists possess a driving force to gain attention on social media, it is their responsibility “to learn the warning signs and not be taken in by the grandiose pretensions [as well as] image manipulations of narcissistic individuals” (Payson). Ideally, individuals should limit their involvement on social media platforms to avoid having an excess admiration for vanity, egocentricity, as well as self-promotion, which is presented as a negative image by Payson. Narcissists’ troubles create temporary relationships with individuals due to their overconfidence and irresponsibility to recognize the wrongness of their actions. As users are advised about the potential dangers that result from social media, God guided Adam and Eve away from the tree of knowledge in the garden of Eden because touching or eating from it would destroy their spiritual relationship with him. However, the duo underestimated the extremity of the consequences due to the temptation “of food [that] was pleasant to the eyes.… [Eve] took of the fruit… and did eat…. [She also offered fruit to] her husband… and he did eat” (King James Version, Gen. 3.6). Since Adam and Eve committed a sin and were only concerned of themselves, they acted against God’s word, which demonstrated their ephemeral promise to be faithful to him. Not only did it prompt a lost connection with God, but it also changed their lifestyles, as Eve was deprived of equality and Adam was sent to the Eden Cherubims.
