Since enrolling in the College of Pharmacy, I have worked to improve my leadership skills through my involvement in community service and being an active member and Historian of Lambda Kappa Sigma (LKS). Joining Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS) will allow me to learn more about myself as a leader, including where I can improve and how I can benefit those around me, and assist me in becoming a more effective leader. My personal goal as a member of PLS is to feel more comfortable interacting with other professionals, positively interact with all populations I may encounter, and step out of my comfort zone when given new opportunities for advancement and reflection. This meeting brought me out of my comfort zone and taught me to network. As a greeter at the registration table, I had the benefit of meeting and interacting with pharmacists and vendors as they arrived at the event. Walking through the exhibit hall, I learned about the businesses I may encounter in my career as a pharmacist and interacted with employees from businesses the independent pharmacy I work for uses. These employees were from the same region of the state as the pharmacy I work for, proving to be valuable contacts. I encountered these same contacts when I had the opportunity to attend ThoughtSpot 2017, a trade show held by AmerisourceBergen. This was an opportunity to network with independent pharmacy owners and businesses from all around the U.S. The contacts from KPhA remembered me, showing me the importance of communication and how intimate the world of pharmacy is. This experience taught me that communication is a skill I could expand. PLS is a great opportunity to be around other leaders that can assist me in bettering my communication skills and feeling more comfortable talking to professionals I encounter.
