The Ku Klux Klan lynched 3,446 blacks in 86 years (Starr). The Ku Klux Klan could very well be one of the most despised hate groups that have ever existed in American history. There were three different phases of the KKK throughout time. The Second KKK has many interesting facts in its self. They came back after quitting for many years, did some very atrocious and major acts, and had eventually fallen later.
The First Ku Klux Klan had first started in 1865 and had soon after ended around 1882 after the U.S. Supreme Court had declared the Klan unconstitutional (KKK founded). Later after this in a new century, the Ku Klux Klan reincarnated in 1915 (Baker). This was done by William Joseph Simmons as he and fifteen others rode a bus to stone mountain, Georgia, and lit a wooden cross on fire to symbolize and announce the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan (Rothman).
The Ku Klux Klan started to do actions to help grow the Klan after this. By the spring of 1920 the newly founded Ku Klux Klan only had a few thousand members. William Joseph Simmons decided to hire Mary Elizabeth Tyler and Edward Young as publicity promoters to help grow the Klan. First, The Great Depression played a significant role to lead to the end of the Ku Klux Klan in which that the members lost their jobs and money, so they had to put focus on supporting themselves (History.com Staff). The conviction of David Stephenson, a Klan leader, who brutally raped and murdered a white woman, caused the Ku Klux Klan’s numbers to dwindle. Many of the Klansman did not support the actions done by their fellow Klansman, and decided that it was not worth it to be labialized as a racist vigilante for being a member (Rothman).
