With the demographic shift, known as the “elder boom,” our Social Security system, and aging services will face great challenges. Increasing life expectancies and higher incidences of chronic disease (Fig 1), currently the leading cause of mortality worldwide, will drive up demand on our already stressed health care system (Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2002). According to the Geriatric Mental Health Alliance of New York (MHA-NYC, 2009), people who suffer from a chronic disease are also more likely to suffer from a mental illness. Indeed, as the incidence of chronic disease increases, the number of older adults with mental illnesses is expected to double from 7 million to 14 million people (CDC, 2013).
Starting from a early age you start to develop a unique identity and by the time you reach adulthood that unique identity has fully formed, you also reach mid life crisis stage as an adult and eventually surrender to old age. As adults we continue to learn and grow from our experiences and continue to develop emotionally and physically. The physical changes however are not always positive ones, as we grow older our bodies tend to grow weaker and our bones deteriorate. Adults go through many stages of physical changes throughout early and middle adulthood with the final stage of physical changes occurring in late adulthood. It is later adulthood that we start to develop wrinkles, body deficiencies, and an overall deterioration of the body Psychological

The numerous stressors during middle adulthood may include an individual 's early life that is unfulfilled, unsatisfied dreams, or thoughts of aging and mortality (Papalia, 01/2015, p. 474). However, many individuals react with turning points then crisis to midlife changes and stressors (Berk, 2015, p. 558).

On November 16, 2014 I interviewed “Regina George”, age 45. Based on my interview I believe that Regina is in the Middle Adulthood or Stage 7, of Erik Erikson’s Theory of Development for many reasons. When in the Middle Adulthood stage, you are 45 to 60 years old and the important event in this stage is work and parenthood, which Regina spends most of her time doing. Erik Erikson’s theory describes 8 developmental stages through which a healthy developing human should pass from infancy to late adulthood. These stages include Infancy, Toddlerhood, Preschool, Elementary, Adolescence, Young Adulthood, Middle Adulthood, and Late Adulthood.
