Leadership and management are two qualities that have the potential to positively impact any aspect of life. With myself being a student-athlete, I realize the importance of robust leadership and management. I have been on teams and worked for employers with poor leadership and management, and observed the shortcomings from those inadequacies firsthand. Athletics have provided me with ample opportunity to develop and shape leadership and management traits from an early age. As a current Division I collegiate athlete and a former three-sport high school athlete, I recognize what leadership and management strategies work when it comes to maximizing a specific group’s potential. I have been voted team captain for the Northern Illinois University (NIU) baseball team during my junior and senior seasons. I am not extremely vocal; however, I lead by example by never taking a repetition off, being accountable, honest, and avoiding complaining or showing negative emotion. My responsibilities as team captain include: holding team members accountable for their actions, organizing players meetings, directly communicating with coaches about any issues or problems, and helping maintain healthy team chemistry. In conjunction with being a team captain for the baseball team, I was voted President of the NIU American Society of Safety Engineers student section. My responsibilities as President include: setting up meetings with guest speakers, marketing to potential members, leading monthly meetings, and interacting with advisor regarding the planning of future meetings and events. Being an executive member in two organizations can prove to be burdensome, but with the qualities of time management, attitude, and communication I have learned to strategies to adapt and evolve to difficulties presented to
