“A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a molder of consensus.” -Martin Luther King Jr. As the world continuously evolves, the basis of human character remains with few alterations. Among some of the most important traits known to each being, respect, honesty, and integrity, for example, the gold standard that has come to outshine the rest is leadership. Though great leaders are most often recognized at the highest degree, such as those of the government and supreme organizations, great admiration and influence can be found at lower levels as well. Though I was much smaller than everyone else and often found myself being criticized for my size, I soon broke through my insecurities and found my place in school. Shortly after, I was reading at a higher level than my peers, being recognized for various honors, and was well on my way to creating an admirable foundation for my education. As I continue on through my high school years, I have made my way to the top fifteen in my class, an honor I have desired for many years. Although my education has been my main focus, working has become a secondary focal point. Growing up with two older brothers, I eventually became a very independent young lady. Because of this, I wanted to start making my own money early on. As a direct result, I learned to budget accordingly and save rather than spend in order to have the ability to buy the items I want rather than relying on others. Additionally, though independence is one of my most solid characteristics, by volunteering with the Southside Health Education Foundation, I discovered that self-reliance is not the key to everything. Instead, I am able to work alongside other bright individuals who guide me to be a better leader myself. With all of these aspects of my life, I have come to recognize a few of the qualities of a great leader: confidence, commitment, unity, and
