` Leadership isn’t always about leading the pack or giving orders. Sometimes it means tutoring freshman with math during lunch or helping the custodian after basketball games or finding depressed teens the resources they need. Leadership is taking initiative to help someone who may have nothing to return. I am a quiet leader. I want to be remembered as a friend that anyone can reach out to without hesitation. Society is one man helping out the other. It is very flattering when people ask me for help because they are giving an opportunity. I think at times teachers are more receptive to highly motivated students versus students who struggle to complete school. It is easy to say the lower-class and other ethnic groups have the same opportunities when the struggles of those communities are not actually understood. The deep concentrations of poverty, unemployment, crimes, and broken school systems, etc in ethnic communities lead teens to feel depressed and isolated with no outlet thus they use alcohol and drugs as a getaway. I appeal to students who do not understand how education can benefit them. I cannot wait to meet people of many talents, interests, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and perspectives with intellectual curiosity in a college classroom setting. Sometimes I wonder how a class discussion would differ if we had just one person with a socioeconomic background; the entire class would be forced to consider something new. I want to capture an intellectual dialogue between people with different perspectives, values, and backgrounds in a classroom. Everyday I go to school thinking how I can create a life and school community with everyone I interact with. I believe I embody the character, leadership, maturity, financial need, and scholastic ability the scholarship committee wants in a selected candidate who will represent the Colorado Masons Benevolent
