My Leadership Philosophy Essay

Leadership is the ability to inspire and guide others towards a shared goal or vision. A good leader not only possesses excellent management skills but also demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and integrity. When I look at myself and ask “What kind of leader do I want to be?” That question is answered when looking back on the leaders that I have worked with and trained under.

When I first entered the workforce I was hired at a store named Office Depot, and there I had my first taste of incompetent leadership. Some managers were rude and did not listen to customers or employees. While others were lazy and sent other people to do work that was assigned to them. Finally some of them stole from the establishment and were fired soon after. Because this was my first taste of working under someone incompetent, it made me want to be better. Leadership is not only about being in charge but also about motivating and empowering others to achieve a common goal.

Here I learned that the Autocratic leadership style was not one that I wanted to do when I was put into that position. Although the autocratic style can be done properly it also can be very flawed. I personally don't want to make all the decisions for myself and then just pass down orders to my subordinates. I told people what to do and did not give any openings for opinions and ideas other than my own. This led to a breakdown of team synergy and teamwork and communication. The team only did what I asked instead of free thinking and giving me pushback on what ideas were good and what ideas were not. This did not help equip anyone with the ability to start leading themselves. Although the team achieved success in the end, no one grew from the experience and no one learned how to be a better teammate, coworker, or
