The student career center is available at no cost to students of Colorado State University Global Campus and can be found on the portal dashboard. Search options in the career center include, job center, career videos, military transition, finding a job, landing a job, keeping a job and career coaching. The career center has an incredible amount of useful information geared toward all phases of ones career whether an individual is just entering the workforce or is already established. All modules in the career center are easy to navigate and many sections have assessments that a student can complete. I have found the finding a job and keeping a job sections very useful and will expand on these sections.

On the positive side I feel that I have solid communication skills and can form valuable lasting relationships that are based on honesty, integrity and caring about individuals feelings and needs. Scarnati (1997) argues that honesty and integrity are essential elements successful leaders should demonstrate. I value employees and am mindful to treat them with respect and recognize their individual differences, desires and ensure them that they matter to the organization. Comaford (2013) argues that employees that are made to feel they matter are more creative, more likely to collaborate and problem solving ability increases. Upon entering this course, I knew providing a compelling vision of the future was possibly my biggest weakness. The results I received in the Mind Tools leadership assessment confirmed my thoughts as this was my lowest scoring category. In my organization I am expected to be a leader by my senior administrators but realized I function more closely to a manager. Maccoby (2000) argues that managers focus on day to day tasks such as business plans, monitoring progress and budgets while leader’s inspire change. In my current job, I am accountable for just under seventy employees with one manager that is only over thirty of my employees. I realized that I must function as a manager because I need to run day to day operations for over half of my employees, but can improve upon my leadership skills and meld them together. I have started to focus more attention on the future vision of my departments and am more willing to take risks. Additionally, I have placed a higher emphasis on inspiring and motivating employees to come up with ideas and suggestions for process change and future growth. Lastly, I have empowered several employees to become team leads and am mentoring these individuals in day to day operations to free me up for higher level leadership initiatives.
