This paper will focus on leadership. The paper will analyze leadership styles and the characteristics of some of the different styles. This paper will discuss how this student’s academic experiences will contribute to and guide this student’s development as an effective leader. This paper will identify the main tenets of ethical behavior for a public service leader and analyze how this student will use that tenet to guide this student’s leadership. There are six basic leadership styles. The six leadership styles are as follows; transactional, transformational, charismatic, servant, contingency, and trait. The theory that best aligns with this student is the contingency theory. Contingency theory is from Feidler’s 1964 thought based on a major premise that says in order for a leader to be effective, then the leader contorts their leadership style to fit the setting they are in. According to Northouse, P.G., 2004, that is one of the strengths of being a contingent leader, the leader can always change in order to continue to lead. Northouse, P.G., 2004 suggested that Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. This definition in combination with different leadership theories provides a leader with flexibility depending on the leader's style, followers, and situation. Northouse, P.G., 2004 suggested that without effective communication one cannot be an effective leader. The main thing a public service leader must do is always remain unbiased while trying to be ethically correct. This student will use the tenet of being moral to help build trust with those following this public service leader.
According to Northouse, P.G., 2004, a proficient public service leader’s effectiveness to combine the dominant styles that is contingency and charismatic make the difference to establish a leader rather than a relative manager. According to Gaiter, D. J., 2013, the basis of leadership is not about impossible characteristics acquired by few, comparatively, it is a collection of abilities.
