Caring for The Individual: An Examination of Personal Nursing Philosophy Arianna Mailloux 400164224 NURSING 2AA3 Ashley Collins Harris February 19, 2018 As a novice nurse, developing and understanding of ones’ own personal feelings about nursing is important to help shape your clinical practice. Within this paper I will examine my personal assumptions, beliefs and values of the four nursing paradigms to develop a personal philosophy of nursing. This philosophy will be aligned with a known nursing theory and the comparisons will be discussed. Section I: Personal Philosophy of Nursing Person
Critical Thinking: Tanner (2006), had introduce the term ‘thinking like a nurse’. When I read this article I was wondering what it means and takes to think like a nurse, I am a nurse by profession and yet I don’t even know what it means. In order to be a professional nurse, nurses are required to learn to think like a nurse. To my surprise, to be able think like a nurse, a nurse got to clearly defined and understands what is critical thinking and clinical reasoning. Both terms are powerful terms and these terms explain the mental processes nurses use to make certain that they are doing their most excellent thinking and decision making for their patient’s better outcomes.
The four ways of knowing as discussed by Carter are: empirical, ethical, aesthetic, and personal. Each area of knowledge is gained by different paths all of which effect the overall nurse and their way of thinking. Empirical knowledge is gained through observation and testing, it is the abstract nursing knowledge that includes theories and principles that oversee the nursing profession. Ethical knowledge relates to morals and the judgments made during certain situations. This way of knowing is shredding light on what is good, bad, right or wrong in the attempt to analyze ethical problems.
As a new diversity of students in the nursing program increase, the more different learning styles will need to be implemented into nursing programs. The three main known learning styles include auditory, visual, and tactile (kinesthetic) in which nurse educators can utilize these learning styles in the classroom setting. It is imperative for nurse educators first to evaluate the students learning style, to incorporate them into their curriculum to create a more effective learning environment for the nursing students (Young & Seibenhener, 2018). As a nurse educator, I will express my passion for teaching by incorporating features such as clinical assessments, practical application of theory, evaluation, and role modeling into advanced nursing practice, from previous experiences and current experience and clinical practicum to find success and gratification in students chosen profession as well empowering leaners to develop their own strengths, beliefs, and personal attributes to become a good professional. The profession of nursing requires an understanding of popular herbs in order to protect the patient from misinformation and the potentially harmful effects of herbal medicines. Since there is an increased use of herbal medicine in today’s age, the nurse needs to be able to address the matter during assessment of all patients. A strong foundational knowledge is essential in supporting the patient safely and effectively while he or she is receiving such treatments. By blending traditional medicine with holistic and complementary care, this is gaining support among healthcare providers as well as patients. It is the nurse who possesses a unique opportunity to arrange services that facilitate wholeness to the patient.
My instant reaction is dread because it brings back memories of nursing school and all the skills we had to learn. The piece however is powerful because it shows how a nurse is being trained. I found the piece interesting because even in the 1900s the training is on dummies like it still is today, there was no real patient interaction until you learned the skill. It is great to see some things with the structure of learning about nursing have stayed the same.
Philosophy of Nursing Everyone’s values and beliefs about the profession of nursing are all different. The four concepts of nursing are interrelated and all mean something different to every person, too. Throughout this paper, I will be reflecting on my values and beliefs about nursing through the four concepts while comparing them to a nursing theorist with views that are most similar to my own.
Nursing Theorists and their Theory 1.Florence Nightingale- Nightingale’s theory of the Environment is mainly focused on the environment, she believed that, the environment has a great importance that can be used to improve and encourage healing. With proper ventilation, clean air, lack of noise , proper lighting, and adequate elimination of waste. Are a few factors she believed and can be observed and maintained. 2.Sister Calista Roy- Roy’s Theory is based on, in which the individual views biopsychosocial being, in which a person adapt with the constant change of the environment.
