When I think of an African- American that has made significant achievements and that has contributed to society, I remember Lecrae Devaughn Moore. Lecrae is a hip-hop artist who happens to also be a christian. He continues to inspire me through his uplifting and positive music and his active role with his fans and with the youth. Lecrae has been creating music in a genre generally associated with misogyny, violence and drugs. But instead of fall into the mainstream, he talks about slavery, materialism and abuse. Lecrae is giving an alternative for kids like me who need music that lifts you up and makes you think. While rappers are talking about piles of money and having multiple affairs, Lecrae sings about anti-materialism and being faithful to his marriage. This is a necessary culture shock and to some his music was genre changing. For someone was looking for a little more substance in hip-hop music, he is a welcome sight. Although Lecrae has won many awards and fame, he doesn’t fall into the pitfalls other artists of his genre would fall for. He stays happily married with 3 children and refrains from using drugs and he doesn’t abuse alcohol. His 2012 album titled ‘Gravity’ won the Grammy for Best Gospel Album making him the only pure hip hop artist to win the award. His song “All I Need Is You” was nominated for Best Rap Performance. This effectively puts his music out there in the mainstream for people to discover. He wrote a book about his struggles early in life being brought up without a father and moving from male mentor to mentor. Throughout the book he gets real transparent with his personal experiences. I loved the book because most men, especially christian men, don’t open up about what troubles them. Lecrae has released numerous albums and a book. His story is out there and it is inspiring to
