The role of an engineer is to take the principles of mathematics and science and use them in a life application to design a product that benefits society. There is a continual need for innovation, and engineers redesign products to suit the changing needs of the consumer market. Engineers are problem solvers. They analyze the problem, as well as the obstacles surrounding it, and use critical thinking to obtain a solution. It is therefore crucial for an engineer to effectively communicate their ideas to create a solution.

He was born on April 15, 1452 in Vinci, Italy. The amazing thing about Da Vinci is he didn’t receive any childhood education, yet he still managed to invent things that revolutionized the world. Da Vinci took a bold step by leaving the artistic town Vinci, and moving to militarized Florence. Despite having no education, Da Vinci claimed he was a military engineer and started working for the military. He designed catapults, gigantic crossbows, and other mobile artillery. His weapons were like no other at the time. Eventually he started designing multi firing weapons such as his gun which had three rows of horizontal barrels rotating on a pivot. Da Vinci knew reload time was crucial to winning a war, as well, large machinery intimidated the opponents.
Da Vinci continued working as a military engineer for several years, designing weapons and other military means. Other inventions included shielded bridges, trench draining systems, and even a tank. Da Vinci’s tank could be operated by an eight man team. Several men would operate cranks to spin the wheels and steer. Other personal would fire out of shooting holes to attack the enemy. There is discussion about Da Vinci purposely changing a crank shift in the tank so the machine couldn’t actually operate. He was inspired by birds and studied them for a majority of his life. He carefully examined the bird’s wing’s makeup and its aerodynamics. In order to get a similar flight pattern, he needed to design a wing that would slightly twist to catch air to propel upwards. He sketched many ideas, and even built prototypes. Unsuccessful at creating a “bird-like” human sized flying machine, he refocused on a helicopter design prototype, also known as the “aerial screw”. It was operated by crank shafts in the center platform, which would spin a propeller to project upwards. Unfortunately his materials were too heavy, making flight impossible.
Not only was Da Vinci an engineer who created a variety of inventions in the military and aviation field, he also was quite the artist. His most famous paintings are the “Mona Lisa” and the “Last Supper”. Today the “Mona Lisa” is worth nearly one hundred million dollars. Da Vinci also had interest in the makeup of the human body.
