Leonardo Da Vinci’s Parachute The Renaissance period was a time from the 14th to 17th centuries based in Europe. This time period was about the “rebirth” (hence the word renaissance) in curiosity and ways of thinking, such as Humanism. As Humanism grew more popular, many scientists emerged and created many new inventions. One of the greatest inventors of all time worked during the Renaissance, this was Leonardo Da Vinci. One of Leonardo Da Vinci’s inventions was his design of the parachute, Leonardo’s fascination with the idea of human flight led him to design an invention that would evolve and still be used over 500 years later. Leonardo Da Vinci was very interested in flight. He designed the parachute to allow anyone to jump and land safely from any height safely as he stated in his description next to his design, “If a man has a tent made of linen of which the apertures have all been stopped up, and it is twelve Braccia across and twelve in depth, he will be able to throw himself down from any great height …show more content…
His design allowed for large amounts of air to be caught under the pyramid and it would not escape because of the shape and style of the canopy. Leonardo could guarantee it would work because of the physics involved in designing it. In 2000, a British man, Adrian Nicholas, tested Leonardo Da Vinci’s design despite experts telling him it would not fly. The experts thought that it would never work because of the immense weight of the contraption, but to their surprise the parachute worked just as Adrian planned and he even reported that it provided a smoother ride than the modern-day parachute. Although he deployed a modern parachute before landing because Leonardo’s version could hit him, the invention worked and his experiment proved that Da Vinci did design the first modern parachute and credit should go to him instead of the more commonly known Faust Vrančić and Sebastien
