The Renaissance was a time of growth and discovery in the Western world. Art, philosophy, and science were areas that experienced the most change during this time. Leonardo da Vinci was both an artist and a scientist who contributed significantly to the Renaissance period in his drawings, paintings, and engineering.
Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in a farmhouse in Anchiano, Tuscany, which is close to Vinci, Italy (biography.com). His parents were not rich nor they were ever married; He was their only child. At around the age of five, he moved to an estate that belonged to his uncles and grandparents on his father’s side. He was given his first commission to paint an altarpiece for a chapel in Palazzo Vecchio. He was also given a job by Augustinian monks to paint a painting called Adoration of the Magi. At Milan, he worked on an unfinished panel painting The Adoration of the Magi for the monastery of San Donato a Scopeto and an altar painting for the St. Bernard Chapel in the Palazzo della Signoria, which was never begun. Also, From about 1483 to 1486, he worked on the altar painting The Virgin of the Rocks. Later, in 1482, Florentine ruler Lorenzo de' Medici commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to create a silver lyre and bring it as a peace gesture to Ludovico Sforza, who ruled Milan. After doing so, Leonardo sent the future Duke of Milan a letter asking for a job that barely mentioned his skills and considerable talents as an artist and instead talked about skills that would get him more likely hired which are military engineer skills.
