"The Renaissance", also known as the beginning of modern art, started in the early 1400s and continued into the early 1600s. It began in Florence, Italy and quickly spread even as far as the Netherlands. During this time paintings and sculptures became more life-like and beautiful because of the advances in science, especially in anatomy. This era of art gave birth to two of the most influential artists of that time, Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo. Leonardo Da Vinci who lived in Italy during the late 1400s is probably best known for his paintings the "Mona Lisa" and "The Last Supper".
For a while, Cesare Borgia, the illegitimate son of pope Alexander VI, made him the military engineer. He traveled outside the city for a while to get ideas on how to delay wartime to deny the enemy access to the sea. When he returned to Florence, he was assigned another commission called “The battle of Anghiari” which was to be twice as big as “The Last Supper”. But, after two years he decided to abandon it before he had a chance to finish it due to the fact it started to deteriorate as time passed by. However, as he was working on “The Battle of Anghiari”, he was also working on a private commission, that would be known as the most famous art piece of all times, the “Mona Lisa”.

Michelangelo Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy on March 6, 1475. He is known as one of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance. He was not really interested in school, but he was more interested in watching painters at nearby churches and drawing what he would see there. His father realized early on that he was not interested in the family business so at the age of 13 Michelangelo was exposed to the technique of fresco at the Florentine painter’s workshop. While working in the workshop, he was presented with opportunity to study classical sculptures in the Medici gardens and he also received permission from the Catholic Church to study cadavers.

Also, Florence was building a new city hall and proposed to Leonardo and Michelangelo to paint paintings of battles which had taken place. Leonardo chooses to draw The Battle of Anghiari.

Leonardo Da Vinci was engrossed in the study of the arts at a young age. He received no formal education beyond the basics of reading, math, and writing. Da Vinci's father helped pursue his art by introducing him to a well-noted painter, Andrea del Verrocchio, of Florence. 1482 Da Vinci began to paint his own commissioned work called The Adoration of the Magi. He ended up relocating to Milan to work for Sforza Clan, as an engineer, architect, painter, and designer, never getting to finish the piece.
It would be accurate to say that once Da Vinci moved to Milan he had his “big break.” Leonardo Da vinci began making a name for himself by getting acknowledgement from the ruler of Milan, Ludovico Sforza. Ludovico gave da Vinci a job as military engineer and architect. He sketched all kinds of war machine ideas to give Ludovico. Da Vinci worked for Ludovico for almost 17 years.
Another one of his famous works is the last supper. Ludovico Sforza and Duke of Milan asked da Vinci to paint the Last Supper in 1495. It is on the back wall of the dining hall inside the monastery of the Milan’s Santa Maria delle Grazie. It took Leonardo three years to complete. The painting started to flake because he used tempera and oil on dried plaster.
