Learning Journal Three
Introduction
The past week of LED 440 class made me think about not only the fact that there are several layers of culture, but the fact that there are also several perspectives. Also, last week’s written assignments allowed me to look at culture from different perspectives. The specific learned lessons from last week were also demonstrated in our own classroom environment. Altogether, these are the lessons learned from last week’s written assignments and from the class lessons.
Our Class Culture Honestly, I feel that our class culture is being dominated by a few loud people, who do not seem to be interested in being present in class. No, I am not talking about my classmates who are always involved in the class discussions – that’s actually a good thing. I am talking about the people who are always having side conversations and the others who quite frankly are just being rude. I feel bad for the people who are actually trying to get an education, but are being rushed with both vocal and body language cues from certain people. Last week’s readings and classroom instruction made me aware that culture is not set in stone. There are certain steps that can be taken to change culture, but the top leadership has to be willing to initiate. Also, the leadership has to first acknowledge that there is a problem. The Schein (2010) suggests, which require unfreezing, changing, and finally freezing again sounds logical to me. The main thing that stuck with me from this topic was that there needs to be value in order to bring about the culture change. What Schein suggests is that this value needs to come from creating urgency. Once again this makes sense because if there is no urgency to change, then the culture will most likely not
