Eli Moorman Mrs. Lindsey World Lit. 5 March 2023 The Book Thief Markus Zusak presents us with “The Book Thief,” which is about a German girl in World War II. The book is narrated by Death, who tells us a story about Liesel Meminger in WWII. The war had many impacts on people, for others it had more results. Liesel, her family and others in the story experienced many things during the war, but some were impacted more. Liesel Meminger is a German kid who is put into foster care after her brother died and mother left. She thrives in the new environment, even though her mother loves yelling at her. Liesel’s family during the war hides a jew, and the girl becomes good friends with the hiding fugitive. One day the Jew became sick, the family didn’t know what they were going to do with a corpse. Death was just the narrator, telling the story on how he saw and interpreted it. Even the character of Death, which is the guy who reaps souls from dead bodies, saw way too much death. The narrator could not believe how fast people were dying. Death held innocent lives in his black arms, even himself wishing he could send them back. The narrator describes the night one day as the color of Jews, jewish people were dying from left to right, no one could stop it. Death was clearly the most impacted by the world war, he wishes that he didn't have to receive so many souls. Death’s famous line at the very end of the book says, “I am haunted by humans.” This quote shows just how amazing humans are. Death is really impacted on how humans can care for each other in heartache. Even though a world war is raging, normal people stand to help fight evil. Just normal people would hide Jews.
