Shaleah Phillips Applied Activity #2. For this activity, I picked the Lizzie Borden case. Lizzie Borden is perhaps America's most infamous accused axe murderer, who was tried for her alleged crimes, killing her stepmother and her father, in a sensational trial in 1893 in Massachusetts. Borden lived at the same residence as her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. Borden and her father were close and had a good relationship. As for Borden and her stepmother, their relationship is not that good. According to Linder (n.d.), Bridget Sullivan stated that she had not seen any signs of an ugly relationship between Borden and her stepmother. Other townspeople had said that was not true. Mrs. Borden believed that they were poisoned since Mr. Borden was not a well-liked man. It was discovered that they ate some bad meat and contracted food poisoning. In the article by Linder (n.d.), it states that the murders took place on August 4, 1892, at the residence located at Second Street in Fall River, Massachusetts. Borden was the person who found her father's dead body. Police were called to the residence approximately half an hour or so after the body was found. Police searched the home looking for evidence of any sign of a trespasser. According to an article by Crime Museum (2022) the father's body was almost hacked beyond recognition on the couch in their living room. Bridget Sullivan, who was the maid, found the stepmother's cold body. It was later determined that the stepmother was probably killed first, then the father. Both the mother and father were killed by blows to the head by an axe, while Borden was the only person in the house at the time. As a result, Borden was arrested on August 11, 1892. The next day, she entered a plea of "not guilty" to the charges of murder. Following the plea of not guilty, on August 22, Borden was taken to the courtroom for her preliminary hearing, which in the end the judge pronounced her "possibly guilty" and ordered her to face a grand jury and possible
