My assignment for the writing 101 group project was to present how to conduct an interview. The information for this presentation came from The Curious Researcher by Bruce Ballinger. My group consisted of five people, we all would present this topic together. Knowing that we had a big group for a relatively small presentation, we had to divide the groups roles up very evenly so everyone could participate. This was the first thing we did as a group.
Working with a group of members having diverse cultures, experiences, personalities and skills can result in difficulties. An unpopular choice I made was during my Social Studies 11 course, I was assigned a group report about Pierre Trudeau. I was faced with a dilemma, I had to choose between my friends who were not the most “hardworking” or complete strangers who I knew were efficient and astute. Realizing that my grades mattered I took the risk of teaming up with strangers. We were all strong students and wanted to do well on the report, but we didn’t know one another.
Every time that a group project is assigned I look everywhere in search of hardworking people, but unfortunately this is rare nowadays. I personally do not like working with a group of people, it is a waste of our time for a number of reasons. People are more dependent on one another and expect the job to be done for them without even trying. This affects the way we are now, things are not supposed to be easy and just magically be solved; it defeats the purpose of working together with each other and learning. I agree that more people can serve as a power source for more research, but it still isn’t sufficient enough for those who just act like fools and don’t get their work done; the one’s that are goofing around can distract the rest of the group members and convince them to join the dark
Groupthink is when a large group of people all agree with one opinion for the sake of unity rather than use facts and evidence to form their own opinions. Groupthink has the power to suppress different opinions by creating a feeling of peer pressure that suppresses other opinions. It is a powerful phenomenon that can prevent people from sharing their own ideas and merely agreeing to an idea due to their loyalty and lack of will to disagree. This practice has caused many problems throughout history. Groupthink is a powerful tool of manipulation when used by politicians and spearhead figures.
One of my classes my first at NC State demonstrated this. In COS 100 there is a semester long group project. Having partners who care about their education was a welcome change of pace from previous experience and made the experience enjoyable. I experienced a similar situation in CH 101. Additionally, COS 100 makes the case that working together and communicating is the best way to advance the sciences.

Group learning was imperative for my growth as an individual in a society where working with others is inevitable, and an essential ability. Knowing this, I am going to communicate this as much as I can to any students I encounter who are anti-group
We will have to show the group how to use “I” statements, how to address members with respect, how to give appropriate feedback, and how to maintain appropriate boundaries. It is our task to get the group to talk to each other rather than talking to us or through us. We also need to teach the students how to listen by modeling the way we attend to them. Which involved them asking for help after my presentation, so that really was the only success. So I guess I can say that having and planning out these events did not work out for me very well. What worked for me this semester was the in class discussions because I was able to interact with the opinions and I was able to share my opinions. These discussions also made me feel that I was apart of the class and not just an empty voice in the front of the class.
Running down the field with the ball in my feet and my teammates shouting at me to pass the ball. My only thought was that I can score alone, I don 't need my teammates. I guess now looking back in the past when I was a kid I never realized how valuable teamwork is in soccer. Looking back I almost never played like I was on a team. I played like it was a one man show.
I have been assigned more group work and group projects in middle school than elementary school. As a result of the abundant amount of group assignments I have been given, I have become less hesitant to express my ideas. I chose to represent this part of my life with an ant colony since ants need to work as a team in order to sustain their colony and get work done; this is the same as group projects and assignments because in order for assignments to get done efficiently, all people of the group must contribute and work
My small group experience was back in Secondary School where I was part of my school’s National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) Cadet Leaders’ committee. The group lasted for approximately two years. Within the two years, we have meetings every fortnightly. This committee is a task group in which all members worked together to carry out activities for the school’s NPCC unit. The Cadet Leaders’ committee comprises of 10 members.

Motivation, perception and team work are all vital aspects of a functioning group no matter how big or small. Without these contributions, we cannot achieve the goals. Not only did I learn more about how it is to work in groups, but I also learned something about myself. In the end, the experiences I had, both with the group and individually, was worth it. It prepared me not only in college, but in my future career as well.
